A domain name makes your website or application accessible on the Internet. A domain name is linked via an IP address to a website server, which can then display your website to the visitor on request.

What can I use a domain name for?

Usually, a domain name is used to make a Web site or application accessible. However, you can also purchase a domain name purely for the use of e-mail with your chosen name.

What kind of domain names are there?

Domain names come in all sorts of flavors. Although there are rules governing domain names, namely:

  • It must contain only lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9) and/or a hyphen (-)
  • It must be a minimum of 2 characters and a maximum of 63 characters long
  • The domain name must not go against public order

You also have the choice of a so-called TLD (Top Level Domain). Usually we refer to this with the word: domain name extension. These are the last few characters that end the domain, namely: .nl, .com or .net.

What does a domain name cost?

The cost of a domain name varies by TLD. For the popular .nl domain name, costs can often be found just under 10 euros per year, as well as for a .com domain name.
